Aeronautical Initiation Certificate (BIA)
The BIA
with the ACD
The BIA was created in 1999. It is a French national education diploma linked to the world of aviation and space; a bridge between passion and reason, knowledge and practice, professional and amateur, civil and military.
General objectives
Through its multidisciplinary approach, preparing for the BIA aims:
- to enrich school education;
- to explore the different facets of aviation and space;
- to discover the paths leading to careers in this sector, where there are many different opportunities. A student preparing for the BIA will often find motivation and ideas for building a personal career plan.
Teaching method and organisationTeaching takes as practical an approach as possible. It comprises at least 40 hours of lessons in total, to which time for experiments or practical exercises may be added. The course is mainly aimed at students in the last years of secondary school (seconde and première), and possibly at strong students in troisième.
The course introduces students to the main areas of aviation (aerodynamics, meteorology, aerology, navigation, safety, etc.) and gives them a realistic overview.

The ACD has entrusted the AIPBIA (Isère association for the promotion of the BIA) with organising the course, which takes place at the Lycée Vaucanson in Grenoble and the Lycée du Grésivaudan in Meylan.
Every student has the opportunity to make a 30-minute educational “discovery” flight under the responsibility of ACD instructors or experienced pilots. At the ACD it is a pleasure for us to share these special moments: showing them the aircraft they are going to fly in, letting them experience the feel of the controls, carrying out a pre-flight inspection, and so on.
