Flying
in the mountains

Grenoble lies at the heart of the French Alps, which makes the Aéro-Club du Dauphiné one of France's leading mountain flying clubs. Our school offers several flight training programmes to prepare pilots for private flying in mountain regions.

in detail

Mountain awareness and Mont Blanc flights

We offer a short Mountain Awareness course (MEG) to prepare pilots to fly safely in the mountains, as well as specific training in the rules and procedures for sightseeing flights over the Mont Blanc glaciers. These courses are open to members and visiting pilots.

The “mountain flying” rating

We also offer a rigorous training programme to prepare licensed pilots to take off and land at French altiports and mountain airstrips, on dry ground as well as on snow. These programmes prepare pilots to add the additional “mountain flying” rating to their licence. This additional rating gives access to all altiports and mountain airstrips. There are two types of mountain rating: wheels and skis.

Mountain rating (wheels)

This rating can be obtained in 15 to 40 hours of flying. Everything in the manuals must have been absorbed and be applied from the very first landing, as going around on short final is generally not an option.

Mountain rating (skis)

It can be obtained in 15 to 40 hours depending on your aptitude. Knowing snow and its many states depending on the season, the temperature and the time of day; sliding on skis with no brakes and a turning radius that is harder to control; steep slopes and cambers: all this makes it an even more “mountain” rating, as it includes landings on glaciers, in the high mountains, in one of the harshest environments there is.
