The ACD at Saint-Geoirs
from 1999 to today
In 1999 a new page was written in the Aéro-Club du Dauphiné's history when it took over the Aéro-Club de Grenoble – Saint-Geoirs (1978-1999), which operated at the aerodrome of the same name, LFLS, later renamed Grenoble-Isère and then Grenoble Alpes Isère…
Remember that the St Geoirs grass airfield, opened by the State in 1939 as a military emergency airfield, had become a small civil light aviation field after the Liberation. It suddenly rose in rank at the time of the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble (see above), becoming a large commercial aerodrome.
At this new facility, however, light aviation carried on within two small flying clubs: Les AILES de l'ISÈRE (1948-1978) and the Aéro-Club de Voiron-Bièvre-Chartreuse (1963-1978), which merged in 1978 to form the Aéroclub de Grenoble-Saint-Geoirs, taken over by the ACD in 1999. A notable event was the move of the ACD's activities to the north of the airfield, next to SEFA/ENAC, with the construction of a superb hangar, thanks to the ACD vice-president at the time, Mr Cucherat.
Light aviation continued under this new banner, with a fleet allowing training and trips from this second base of operations.
What came next: the ACD at Alpe d'Huez.
